About Me

Welcome to North Cottage!

I am Lisa Ryckman and this is my third year at this unique school.  I teach English Language Arts 10-30 and Social 10-30.  I also am the lead teacher on other humanities courses such as Aboriginal Studies 10-30 as well as various psychology or sociology courses.

I have been teaching in Red Deer Public since 1990, except for a few breaks to have two boys (who are now 22 and 26!), work on my Master of Counselling Psychology degree, or teach in Dubai.  I have loved my career as a teacher or counsellor in Red Deer Public in which I spent 12 years at Eastview Middle School and 13 years at Hunting Hills High School.  Mental health is another area in which I have really enjoyed working such as Unit 39 in Red Deer Hospital, Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, and Red Deer 49th Street Community Health Centre.

On a personal note, I really enjoy travelling to new places with my husband, regardless of whether just a road trip to someplace local, or a plane trip across the planet!  I also enjoy trying new foods (although chocolate is still my all-time favourite food group), spending time with my family, spoiling our 2 grandchildren rotten, and cuddling with our 4 pets (2 cats and 2 dogs).  This summer I bought a kayak and fell in love with the serenity of being out on the water by myself.

I feel fortunate to have become part of the Alternative School family, especially North Cottage High School, and look forward to working with our students and their families!

Have a fabulous year!
